The Battle of the Teuteburg Forest (described as the Varian disaster by Roman historians) took place in the year 9 AD , when an alliance of Germanic trives led by Arminius ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions led by Varus. Despite numerous successful campaigns by the Roman army over the Rhine in the years after the battle, the Romans were to make no more attempts to conquer and permanently hold Germania beyond the river. |
