The "Dirndl" used to be servent's customes, but since the end of the 19th centuary the upper-class discovered it as "rural dress". After the first world war the "Dirndl" became really popular, because it was a cheap alternative to the expensive historic women's costume. Symbolic
The media says that the ribbon, the apron is bound together with, symbolizes the woman's marrige status. If the ribbon is on the right it means the is married or has a boyfriend, if it is on the left it means she doesn't have a boyfriend. This is probably not an old tradition, because married and not married women were wore different clothes in former times and could be distinguished because of them. |
